I got caught up in that City Pop discovery a few years ago, and like a lot of the people who came across it, made efforts to buy vinyl editions of a lot of those classic albums. I managed to get in early enough to get a few of the bigger releases at a reasonable price, but once covid and price gouging came along, you had to get creative to get them at a normal price.

One trick was to look at bulk lots that happened to have a record you wanted, in amongst them all. These were usually second hand lots that sellers just wanted to offload as quickly and cheaply as possible, it usually worked out to around $5 AUD per record after shipping. These sellers would rarely check the condition or even what was included in the lot, so it was a bit of a gamble, but it usually paid off. Most of the records I obtained were in pretty good nick, with usually only one or two in these lots of 25-50 that were scratched or beaten up enough that they weren’t worth keeping around.

What this meant though, was now I have a collection of about 100-150 records of things that I have no idea what they are or kind of music is held within, my guess is lots of min’yo and enka which I am fine with. I plan to listen through these records, do some research on them, talk about them, review them, catalogue them and do a bit of musical discovery and exploration.
